You know me as a co-founder and past president of Jazz Education Network but I also oversee the Outreach program and JAZZ2U grants with Mike Vax and Phil Dunlap. I want to update our members about the wonderful happenings in these JEN initiatives! President Bob Sinicrope chose the 2015 conference theme in San Diego to be “Outreach: Sharing the Gift of Jazz.” Thanks, Bob, for spotlighting JEN’s Outreach program and asking me to share. I am glad you are busy prepping for your student’s tour to South Africa!
OUTREACH
Since the JEN Outreach program’s inception in 2010 at the Inaugural Conference in St. Louis, JEN artists and clinicians have reached more than 12,000 students and community members! At each conference, JEN partners with the local community to bring conference talent to new audiences. We work with a local jazz educator coordinator to schedule conference musicians to perform at the various schools/ sites during the conference, free of charge. Special Thanks to our local coordinators for the San Diego Unified School District this year, Mark Nicholson and Marc Dwyer who organized many concerts and clinics, and to the many JEN musicians who gave of their time and talents to this initiative, especially Mike Vax and Brad Goode who spent almost all day with lucky students! Next year in Louisville, Diane Downs and Jerry Tolson will be scheduling the Outreach activities. Congrats to Diane Downs’ Louisville Leopards for their Led Zepplin video going viral this week! Over a million hits and rated #1 video of the week by Today Show!

Year round benefits for JEN members! Want to bring in a jazz artist/clinician for April Jazz Appreciation Month or International Jazz Day (IJD)? With the assistance of a total of $40,000 in grants from the Herb Alpert Foundation, JEN has extended the Outreach program to a year round basis! Close to 10,000 students/adults experienced JAZZ2U in the past two years! JEN members (teachers or artists) can apply for a $300 grant to have a clinic, concert or jazz informance at their school or community center! Simply click here to apply www.JazzEdNet.org . It is a short app with a quick turnaround and we especially are looking for JAM and IJD (April 30) events!
TAKE 5!
On International Jazz Day, April 30, we are encouraging ALL teachers, especially non-jazz specialists, to TAKE 5 minutes at the beginning or end of class all day long to listen, talk, discuss, play jazz! Can you help spread the word in your school? Wouldn’t it be great to have the teachers of History, Math, English, etc. taking 5 minutes for Jazz? And let’s encourage the orchestra, guitar and keyboard class, and elementary music teachers to Take 5 and even offer to help them by giving them recordings and information.

NOMINATE A MUSIC EDUCATOR!
To bring attention to the wonderful work of music educators the Grammy’s are encouraging self and public nominations until March 31, 2015 at grammymusicteacher.com. I was happy to serve on the semi-finalist selection panel and we observed a variety of fine teachers elementary through high school and several college. High school teachers, please encourage your talented music students to audition for the Grammy Jazz and Vocal Jazz Ensembles.
