Cedric Dent

Cedric Dent, a native of Detroit, Michigan, was a baritone vocalist, music arranger, and co-producer of the 10-time GRAMMY Award-winning vocal group, TAKE 6. In 2011, Dent retired from TAKE 6 after 25 years with the group. He is also a 2-time Grammy-nominated music arranger and created several arrangements for the Grammy-award winning recording Handel’s Messiah A Soulful Celebration (1992). In 2014, Dent rejoined TAKE 6 for their induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN.

A professor at Middle Tennessee State University, Dent directs the MTSU Singers (a vocal jazz ensemble), teaches a course he developed on the history of black gospel music, and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music theory. He also coordinates the School of Music’s internship program for music industry majors.

Dent continues to compose and arrange for various live and recording projects, and has traditional choral works and vocal jazz ensemble arrangements published by Walton Music (https://www.giamusic.com/waltonmusic/) and Anchor Music Publications (anchormusic.com) respectively. His composition, “I Hear the Drum,” was premiered by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and the MET Singers in 2016, and his arrangement of the Charlie Chaplin classic, “Smile,” was performed by the Oakwood University (Huntsville, AL) Aeolians under the direction of Jason Max Ferdinand at the American Choral Directors Association’s (ACDA) national conference in Kansas City, MO in 2019.

Dent holds degrees from the University of Michigan, the University of Alabama, and the University of Maryland. As an alumnus of the University of Michigan, Dent was selected to receive the 2016 Hall of Fame Award from the School of Music, Theatre & Dance Alumni Society.

Greg Yasinitsky

Greg Yasinitsky is a Regents Professor of Music in the Washington State University School of Music where he teaches composition, jazz studies and saxophone. His latest CD is YAZZ Band: New Normal on Origin Records. Greg is the winner of the 2017-18 American Prize for Orchestral Composition, Pops Division, for his Jazz Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. Greg is a member of the Washington Music Educators Hall of Fame, a former Board Member of the Jazz Education Network, and is a recipient of the WSU Eminent Faculty Award, the top honor for faculty at WSU, the Sahlin Faculty Award for Research, Scholarship and Arts, and the College of Arts And Sciences Distinguished Faculty Award. Also, he is the author of the book Improvisation 101: Major, Minor and Blues and contributed a chapter to the Amazon best selling book Rehearsing the Jazz Band.

Yasinitsky has an international reputation as a composer, arranger and saxophonist. Yasinitsky’s music has been performed in over forty countries world-wide and he is a recipient of several grants and awards. He has written music especially for David Sanborn, Clark Terry, Sean Jones, Tia Fuller, Mark Whitfield, and has accepted numerous commissions for orchestral pieces, solo works and chamber music. Yasinitsky earned degrees at the Eastman School of Music (DMA) and San Francisco State University (MA, BM).

As a saxophonist, Yasinitsky has appeared with numerous distinguished artists including Sean Jones, Alex Acuna, Conrad Herwig, Randy Brecker, Marcus Printup, Ed Calle, Kirk Whalum, Lou Rawls, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Louie Bellson, Stan Getz, Lionel Hampton, Manhattan Transfer, Mel Torme and Clark Terry. Additionally, Yasinitsky is Principal Saxophonist with the Spokane Symphony and has performed as a member of the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Oakland Symphony. Yasinitsky can be heard with Tom Harrell, Art Lande and others recordings released by the Musical Heritage Society, Soul Note, Palo Alto and Revelation Records. His playing and jazz compositions can be heard on over forty compact discs including recordings released on his own label, YAZZ Recordings.

Yasinitsky is also in demand as a conductor and clinician, and has presented concerts and workshops throughout the US, Canada, Europe and Japan. Additionally, Yasinitsky has been the subject of articles and reviews in Jazz Player, Saxophone Journal, The Instrumentalist, Jazz Educators Journal and Yamaha’s New Ways magazines and has contributed articles to numerous scholarly journals. Yasinitsky is a Yamaha performing artist and JodyJazz artist.
