SISTERS IN JAZZ

COLLEGIATE COMBO COMPETITION

In an effort to support JEN’s overall commitment to represent and cultivate diversity and inclusion in jazz, the Jazz Education Network (JEN) Women in Jazz Committee re-established the Sisters in Jazz Collegiate Combo Competition. Through this exemplary program, full-time university students identifying as young women or non-binary jazz artists ages 18-29 will audition and be selected to perform in the Sisters in Jazz quintet.

Marion Hayden

2023 Sisters in Jazz Selectees will rehearse and receive feedback from this year’s director, Marion Hayden.
The quintet will prepare two charts to premier at the 14th annual JEN Conference in Orlando, FL, January 4-7, 2023.

About MARION HAYDEN

Born in Detroit, MI, a crucible of jazz, Marion Hayden is one of the nation’s finest proponents of the acoustic bass. Mentored by master trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, Hayden began performing jazz at the age of 15. She has performed with such diverse luminaries as Bobby McFerrin, Nancy Wilson, Geri Allen, Regina Carter, Steve Turre, Lester Bowie, David Allen Grier, James Carter, Dorothy Donegan, Joe Williams, Lionel Hampton, Frank Morgan, Jon Hendricks, Hank Jones, Bobby Hutcherson, Larry Willis, Vanessa Rubin, Sheila Jordan, Mulgrew Miller, Annie Ross and many others.   She is a co-founder of the touring jazz ensemble Straight Ahead- the first all woman jazz ensemble signed to Atlantic Records. She is a member of the Detroit International Jazz Festival All-Star Ambassadors touring ensemble.

BEARER OF THE CULTURE 

Widely recognized as a standard bearer of culture and artistic history, Hayden received a 2019 Art X Grant and a Creators of Culture Grant for original musical works. She was Artistic Director for a 2018 Knight Arts Foundation Grant encouraging young women in jazz. In 2016 Hayden was honored for her work as a performer and educator with the prestigious Kresge Artist Fellowship- a 1 year fellowship and grant award given an elite group of creative artists.  She was the recipient of a 2016 Jazz Hero Award.- a national award given by the Jazz Journalists Association- recognizing people who have made a significant contribution through their artistry and community engagement.

ARTS ADVOCATE

As an arts advocate, Hayden has served as Grant Panelist for the Detroit Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, Art-Ops and the Highland Park Cultural Commission. She also serves as panelist or consultant for South Arts, Detroit Sound Conservancy, Charles Wright Museum of African American History, the Kresge Foundation, Jazz Education Network and Societie of the Culturally Concerned.

A passionate advocate for youth music education, Hayden teaches for Michigan State Univ. Community Music School Detroit and is an educator in residence for the Detroit Jazz Festival. As well, she conducts the Next Gen Ensemble- a performing group of some of the areas best young musicians. Hayden holds faculty positions in the Jazz Studies Departments at University of Michigan and Oakland University. Hayden is the Bass instructor for the Geri Allen Jazz Camp, Newark, NJ. , and in 2021 will join the faculty at Centrum Jazz, Port Townsend, WA.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

Sisters in Jazz alumnae include such renowned artists as Sara Caswell, Dawn Clement, Anat Cohen, Anne Drummond, Rosana Eckert, Tia Fuller, Linda May Han Oh, Tina Raymond, Chihiro Yamanaka, and many more.

And, now, your name can be added to the list.

Eligibility

All applicants must be:

  • A full-time college student, concurrently taking a minimum of 12 undergraduate hours or six graduate hours
  • A JEN Full Individual or eJEN Member

Application Requirements

All applicants must submit the following by October 15th:

1. An application (submitted through getAcceptd.com)

2. Recording Submission: Preferred format mp3 (M4A or wav files also accepted)

  • Four individual audio recording files of your best playing, total recording time not to exceed 25 minutes. (Video recordings not accepted.):
    • a ballad
    • a medium-tempo blues (swing)
    • an up-tempo rhythm changes tune (swing)
    • a straight eighth tune (Latin, rock, funk, or original composition)
  • Vocalists and horn players:  play the head, take several choruses of solo and take the head out.
  • Pianists, bassists and guitarists: comp the changes or walk a chorus before soloing if not also accompanying a horn or vocal soloist and demonstrating those abilities. Using an existing recording that is not specifically in this format will be also be accepted, however.
  • Drummers: Everyone should play “Now’s the Time” as the blues selection and play the melody orchestrated around the set on the head in and out. Blues and rhythm changes should include trading 4s or full chorus solos. One tune, either blues or rhythm changes should include time playing with brushes as well as sticks.  If some individual tracks are longer and include several soloists, indicate on the application at what time trading or solo choruses begin on those tracks.

3. One letter of recommendation 

  • You will submit the email address of one recommender in your application.
  • Upon submission of the application, they will receive an email with a link to upload the letter on your behalf to Acceptd.

4. A bio, resume, or CV listing pertinent musical experiences.

5. A headshot or photo

  • File should be print quality (high).
  • File types accepted include: jpg, gif, and png.

6. An official copy of college transcript or other proof of concurrent full-time enrollment in an accredited college, university, or conservatory (a minimum of 12 undergraduate or six graduate hours)

Meet the

2022 sisters in jazz

Summer Carmago

Summer Camargo, 20, a trumpet player at the Juilliard School, will be starting her third year of college majoring in Jazz Studies and is a part of the Jerome Greene Fellowship.

Summer, born and raised in Hollywood, Florida, has been a member of the prestigious Grammy Band, Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo, Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, and was named a National YoungArts Foundation Merit winner, and Honorable Mention in Jazz Trumpet, as well as Merit winner in Jazz Composition. Summer was also Downbeat Magazine’s Outstanding Student Jazz Performance Award recipient. At the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Essentially Ellington Festivals, she received Outstanding Trumpet Soloist Awards, and in 2018, Summer won the Ella Fitzgerald Outstanding Soloist Award and the Dr. J. Douglas White Student Composition Contest. She was honored to have the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra record her first, original big band chart, Leap Froggin’. Summer also participated in the Vail Jazz Workshop, Carnegie Hall’s NYO Jazz, the Monterey Jazz Festival Gala and played as a guest artist at the Jazz at Lincoln Center Gala and the Midwest Clinic. In 2020, Summer was honored to be a panelist for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Jazz Congress, joined the Ulysses Owens, Jr. Big Band, was featured in FENDI’s Anima Mundi project in New York City and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Big Band Holiday concert, was the recipient of the the Laurie Frink Grant, and was awarded with an Outstanding Trumpet Soloist Award at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s inaugural Jack Rudin Championship. Recently, Summer placed third for the International Trumpet Guild’s 2021 Ryan Anthony Trumpet Memorial Competition and was commissioned by the University of North Carolina in Greensboro to write an original big band composition for their jazz program. Summer is a proud Conn Selmer/Bach artist.

 

Yeeun Kim

Hailed from South Korea, Yeeun Kim is the jazz pianist, organist, composer, arranger & singer-songwriter. She has explored a diverse range of genres from jazz to sacred music and actively performed in the Dallas-Fort Worth area as a jazz pianist and an organist. She is presently the Director of Music and organist at St. Anne Episcopal in Desoto, Texas.

She is currently pursuing her DMA in Jazz Studies with performance concentration at the University of North Texas. She is a former pianist in One O’Clock Lab Band and teaches undergrad jazz piano as a Teaching Fellow at UNT.

Molly Redfield

Molly Redfield is a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the School of Music, Division of Musicology, at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she is pursuing her Doctorate of Musical Arts, String Bass Performance. She earned her Masters Degree in Jazz Studies from UNLV and was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Division of Jazz Studies and Commercial Music and the Division of Wind Band Studies. Prior to attending UNLV, Redfield attended California State University, Sacramento where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and earned her Bachelor of Music Education, with an emphasis in Classical Bass Performance, and a Bachelor of Music, Jazz Bass Performance.

Some of Molly’s achievements include being a member of the Women in Jazz Allstar Combo at the 2019 and 2020 Palm Springs Women’s Jazz Festival, the 2017 Outstanding Festival Soloist at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival, and the 2016 Outstanding Collegiate Rhythm Section Performer at the Reno International Jazz Festival. She has also been honored with a 2021 DownBeat Magazine, Student Music Award for her vocal arrangement of “Moonglow.”

In addition to her playing and writing, Molly is a passionate music educator and serves as a mentor for the Las Vegas Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Stephanie Tateiwa

Stephanie Tateiwa is a saxophonist, woodwind doubler, and a composer from New York.  She is currently pursuing her undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies in the studio of Charles Pillow, and in Music Teaching and Learning at the Eastman School of Music.

Stephanie has participated in programs and ensembles such as the Eastman Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Bill Dobbins, the Eastman New Jazz Ensemble, The Dave Rivello Ensemble, the award-winning Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra, NAfME All-National Honor Jazz Ensemble, NY All-State Wind Ensemble, Jazz at Lincoln Center Summer Jazz Academy, BUTI Tanglewood Wind Ensemble, Kinhaven Music School Orchestra, and in Mannes Prep Philharmonic as the principal clarinet.

Stephanie has been the recipient of awards including the Essentially Ellington Best Saxophone Award, Hudson Valley Music Club Student Awards, Concerto Competition Winner at the New England Music Camp, and Grand Prix Winner of Concert Festival on the classical piano.  She has had the opportunity to study with her role models such as Allen Won, Charles Pillow, Dariusz Terefenko, Ted Nash, Todd Stoll, Tatum Greenblatt, Alexa Tarantino, Joe Ravo, Gail Levinsky, David Sapadin, and Susan Fancher.
